Improved Trip bonus when resisting?

From the Trip description in combat section of the 3.5E SRD:

If you win, you trip the defender. If you lose, the defender may immediately react and make a Strength check opposed by your Dexterity or Strength check to try to trip you.

and from the Improved Trip feat description in the SRD:

You also gain a +4 bonus on your Strength check to trip your opponent.

If I read this correctly, the +4 bonus, from the Improved Trip feat, on the trip check does NOT apply on your attempt to resist a trip attempt?

For example, a 6th level dwarven Monk with 18 Str, 17 Dex and the Improved Trip feat attempts to make an unarmed trip. His trip attempt has a modifier of +8 (+4 Str and +4 feat). He fails and his opponent attempts to trip him in return. His modifier is still +8 (+4 Str and +4 racial stability). Is this right?

You read it correctly. No, The +4 for Improved Trip only adds when trying to trip another, not when resisting.

You do indeed read it correctly. The bonus only applies when you attempt to trip another, not when you are being tripped.

And as far as I can tell, if someone attempt to trip you and fails, and you countertrip, the +4 does apply... but you won't get a free attack if they go down.
