In all my 22 years of gaming...

A few weeks ago in the fisrt game a ofa new campaign we had two characters, both of them clerics sacrifice themselves for the greater good. First time I'd ever seen that. I don't think the DM was happy, but I'm posisitve that was the right thing to do given our characters and the situation. Oddly enough we've never played that game, or any other, since.

I have never seen PC die--I don't mean "drop below 0 hp," I mean honest to goodness dead, no coming back--in the first game of a new campaign.

Happens all the time. In my current game my party of first level characters were almost wiped out by a conspiracy of ravens.

I saw a character severely legislated by a parliment of owls, once....

Not that there was a lot the rest of us could do, since he left us behind and went off on his own, but still. It was surreal, to say the least.

It's really about part splitting, I think. It's not even bad dice or dumb luck. Just a poor plan by a loner in a game that requires team effort most of the time but especially when the group is young.

A group of us decided to get together (we all lived in different cities) and play d6 Star Wars. I made an Alien Student of the Force and he didn't have a light saber but he did have a preferred weapon. The "prologue", if you will, was to steal some ships and then go on the mission. We bust into the hanger and although I hadn't intended it, my character ended up being in front. We were attacked by some weak scoundrels. They fired. I got hit. First shot and hit of the game and it put me to incapacitated or killed me right there! I think a few more PCs went down before the others had to retreat from the fight! It was actually quite funny!

I don't even remember what happened for the rest of the game. I just remember that after all the prep work, many of us died on the first, "simple" encounter! :)

Have a good one! Take care!

We kicked off a new campaign last sunday in which a Fog Giant nearly TPK'd our entire 5th level party in our first encounter...

Came <holds finger and thumb extremely close together> this close...

Two years ago I had a guy die in the first round of the first combat of the first game of a new campaign.

LOL! That happened to us, too. We had a party of three (1 rogue, 1 wizard, 1 fighter, all first level). The (inexperienced) DM brings out a barbarian orc with a great axe - two party members hide, but the fighter can't get away fast enough. The orc killed the fighter completely and utterly dead with his first blow.

The DM was mortified. He apologized profusely, but the player of the character simply shrugged, erased the name on the character sheet and wrote in a new one. :D

I'd never had it happen until I was running a few one-shots earlier this year. One guy seemed to have a lemming-like suicidal urge. In three different one shots, he died during the first fight of each one. They weren't even stylish deaths; his opinion of cause & effect was completely different than mine so his expectations were completely different from what I, the GM, did.

I'd question my actions if I hadn't been running games for over a decade with at least three dozen different players (many of them 1st time players) that managed to not get geeked during the first combat.

How about this, first campaign I ever ran, first game, first encounter. The party cleric got bored and decided to try to walk through the scorpion-infested forest by herself, after repeated warnings. A few bad tactical decisions and bad die rolls later, and she was dead. Luckly enough, she probably has the least problem with player death of anyone I know.
