This is more local than national news, but he was Texas’ first black DA, and in that post, managed to get more than a dozen prisoners exonerated and released with The Innocence Project. He also started a program to continue investigating wrongful convictions and preventing them in the future.

Joe Matt was one of the group of comic creators in the 90's that was pushing the B&W comic in new directions with personal (VERY personal) revelations galore in his book Peepshow. He, along with Chester Brown, Seth, Joe Sacco, and Jason Lutes were doing things in the black and white comic arena that at the time felt very important; and honestly I think paved the way for the explosion of non-superhero graphic novel content we have seen in the 21st century.
