In Search of the Unknown - your experiences?

First Post
Sixth thread of a series on the old classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure modules. It is interesting to see how everyone's experiences compared and differed.

Did you Play or DM this adventure (or both, as some did)? What were your experiences? Did you complete it? What were the highlights for your group?

I DM'd it. I used it as the start to a longstanding AD&D campaign way back in the early 80's (Unearthed Arcana had just come out so half the party tried out wild elves and later drow) that lasted through to a conversion to 2ed and then 3.0. I have vague memories of it such as a room full of equipment, troglodytes running around, a portcullis trap, and the magic stalagmite chip thing that you only can know about through a random rumor. I reviewed the hackmaster version in the reviews section so you can see some more of my views on it there.

Ah, the memories! The version of the adventure that I had didn't have any monsters or treasure listed in the different rooms; the DM could choose monsters and treasure from a list at the back, and these could equally include kobolds and vampires. (And no, first level characters didn't stand a prayer against vampires back then, either :)).

It was the first thing I ever DMed, when I was nine years old; my father and my five-year-old brother played in it. My dad never played the game again; my brother's still a firm devotee.

It wasn't exactly the best-written adventure, to say the least; but I look back on it with great fondness.

B1 was my first D&D experience, with my older foster brother as DM. With the exception of a lone orc at the beginning (which scared me enough that my fighter PC ran away), there were no monsters in the dungeon. But there were many mysteries to explore and weird rooms. Good times! We gave up on this shortly, as AD&D was starting to appear on shelves and my DM wanted to start a new campaign.

Ah nostalgia!

I played it and had a blast, but that's pretty much only because it was my first game of D&D. I have distict recollections of reading it afterwards and coming to the one part where you could randomly gain or lose ability points. I thought to myself, "This doesn't really seem fair."

I never stood a chance against the influence of D&D.

Absolutely loved this adventure. Packed with all kinds of "weird stuff" that I just absolutely adore, like the mushroom garden, the room with the pools, Zelligar's ingredient room. I DMed it, stocking it with the monsters and treasure in the back of the book, wrote up history on the magic items, background for the monsters w/ motivation, and wrote out flavor text (did this with Keep on the Borderlands as well), and dropped the map to Quasqueton to be found in Castellan Keep.

Yeah, you could say I dug the old modules. I got this one out of my older brother's D&D collection, so now it's MINE!!!

I'm actually running it right now as part of my summer retro campaign. (It's gonna be a light 3e romp through a bunch of old school dungeons.) We've had a couple of sessions already, and it's been pretty fun. I forgot how cool troglodytes can be . . .
