If they fail the Open lock check buy 10, 15, or more (what ever you want really) You could say that they've Snaped off/jammed the lock picks in the lock & cant get them out.

I didn't say I would.

I know you didn't, but you seemed to be leaning towards the direction of pointlessly punishing someone for just trying too hard or too long by dealing them subdual damage.

When hong mentioned that sometimes you just can't get past a high DC, you mentioned that people could work together to achieve a common goal.

It seemed to me that you were leaning towards punishing anyone for trying to break down a door, pick a lock, etc, too many times, even if they worked together.

Now that I know that you forgot you could take a 20 on Open Lock or a Strength check to force a door open, I understand where you were coming from and the confussion is now cleared.
