nay! meershaulk was indeed the main yuan-ti, but he was a "slumberer" like the bullywug god ramenos. therefore, IIRC a tanar'ri usurper (name was something like sssetherperqassitsh or something) tried to weasel his way in. when i get a chance to look at the book again, i'll provide more info.

Yeah, Sseth was their god for awhile. He was an aspect of Set.

"The Black Jungles were once the heart of a yuan-ti empire, or so their legends say. Around the time of Netheril's collapse, an avatar of Set appeared in the jungles of Chult as a yuan-ti abomination with gargantuan wings. The avatar, called Sseth, forged a nation of serpents that stretched from the Peaks of Flame to the eastern extent of the Mhair Jungles, enslaving the emerging human cultures of the region."

"For centuries, Sseth remained distant from the yuan-ti, and tales say that he lay in a state of torpor while his people struggled to regain their lost power. During the Time of Troubles, Sseth reappeared in the Black Jungles for a time, rousing his clergy and exhorting them to muster their strength in preparation for a time when Serpentes would be reborn."

"Sseth: The avatar of Sseth, god of the yuan-ti serpent folk, appeared in the Black Jungles in the form of a giant, winged, magic-using snake, where he challenged his clergy to rebuild their strength. He also battled Ubtao to a draw on the eastern edge of Chult. The Mulhorandi Lord of Evil, Set, has since slain Sseth and absorbed his portfolio."

you're thinking of something totally different from me. ;) sseth was not in the Monser Mythology book (unless you want to extrapolate that he was an alias of meershaulk or whatnot, but that isn't the point i was making).
