Inherent Boni don't stack ?

As the title says.

I always thought if you read 3 Manuals of Bodily Health (+1 CON) you gain a +3 inherent bonus to CON (up to max. of 5).

Now I read the spell Wish:
"...Grant a creature a +1 inherent bonus to an ability score. Two to five wish spells cast in immediate succession can grant a creature a +2 to +5 inherent bonus to an ability score (two wishes for a +2 inherent bonus, three for a +3 inherent bonus, and so on). Inherent bonuses are instantaneous, so they cannot be dispelled. Note: An inherent bonus may not exceed +5 for a single ability score, and inherent bonuses to a particular ability score do not stack, so only the best one applies...."

Hm, I can read 100 Manuals of Bodily Health +1 and never get a better inherent bonus than +1 to CON.
Is this new at 3.5 ?

I always thought dodge and inherent and unnamed boni stack.

This has not changed from 3.0, the various manuals of ability increases did not stack.

And that bit of wording of the wish spell is the same as 3.0

Thanks.

Never had an inherent bonus in my whole adventuring career (nor did my friends).
Now that my character read his first tome (+1 INT) I wondered how inherent boni are handled.

Thanks again.

For gods sake people, the plural of bonus is bonae, just as the plural of bacteria is bacteriae, and the plural of ninja is ninjae.

Please check your facts before posting nonsense to UNsenet bulletin boards. I always do.

I would laugh, but I wouldn't want to encourage him.

As for the topic at hand - they don't stack just like (almost) everything else doesn't stack. Just think of the tomes as an item that casts a permanent spell on you that gives you a named +1 bonus to your stat. If you then use another book to cast that same spell, it wouldn't stack, just like casting two bull's strengths don't stack. The only difference is the name of the bonus and the duration.

P.S. GamerMan12 - your sig is *way* too big.

The inherent bonus thing is really mean. Though the price increases proportionally with the bonus you get, they don't stack.

So you face the problem: Why should I get this +3 book, if the +5 book isnt' increasingly more expensive (like +5 weapon and +3 weapon) AND the +3 book isn't upgradeable.

I had that problem just the other day. I decided to buy other stuff (I could only have got the +3 version, anyway) and hope that I'll get enough money during the next two levels of experience.

Because where are you going to find a +5 book? This isn't aimed at you, it's just become assumed that these items are available in most campaigns, and that annoys me on general principle.

You have to realize what's needed to make one: a level 17+ spellcaster needs to give up 25,000 XP. That's more than an entire level. All he gets out of it is 137,500 gp. That sounds like a lot, but looking at the wealth tables it's considerably less than he'd get by actually increasing his level and fighting bigger enemies. So, why exactly is that spellcaster making books for a total stranger?

I was about to post the same thing.
When someone wants to pay a Wiz20 for a +5 ability boost, there's no need for the book at all. The wizard collects his money, memorizes five wish spells, and grants the inherent bonus the next morning. There's no reason to spend four months crafting an item, nor to waste any money on raw materials.

If you stipulate that only a Wiz17 is available, it's a bit less easy, because he'll only have 2 spell slots at the highest level. He'll need to invest time and money in three wish scrolls first. That's still cheaper and faster than crafting the whole tome though-- and he loses less if he's interrupted on his final day of work.
