When I think of what to do with inspiration, I generally go with the idea that it is something that should be handed out quite sparingly, but have a big impact when used - effects like these:

- Treat a single ability check, saving throw, or attack roll as if you had rolled a 20

- Remain at 1 hp when an effect would reduce you to 0

- Activate a limited use per rest ability for which you have no uses remaining

Basically just a more structured version of 'make up something cool and that's what happens'.

Re-roll a crappy HP roll or to bump a bad roll up to the average if the average wasn't taken.
