Inspiring Warlord build request

First Post
Hello,

I've yet to get the books and I refuse to download their pirated version, but I'm very excited by all I've heard and read on this forum from the past few days.

I understand that for the new warlord class there are 2 flavors - Tactical and Inspiring. I've found some material on the Tactical build (especially from KOTS pregen chars) but none on the Inspiring build.

Could some one post a level 1 Inspiring Warlord build and give a little info on why he choose the powers / feats he did for him?

Ok, here's one, with a few notes:

Race: Half-elf (Wha?!? ... Yes, you read that right. See below.)
Class: Warlord
Str: 16
Dex: 11
Con: 14 (12+2)
Int: 14
Wis: 8
Cha: 16 (14+2)
Skills: Athletics, Diplomacy, Heal, History
Feat: Action Surge

At-Wills:
Wolf Pack Tactics (I like setting up the flanking bonus; if you prefer, Commander's Strike should be equally viable.)
Furious Smash

Encounters:
Priest's Shield (Why? Look at Guarding Attack, one of your standard 1st level encounter options. You cut the damage in half, but you multiply the AC boost by AT LEAST two: same numbers but, it affects you as well as the ally, and it applies against everything, rather than just your target. You could also take a Warlock at-will to have an extra card up your sleeve, but you're likely up front, and this power builds on class strengths. If you want more offense to begin with, you should probably be playing a dragonborn warlord.)
Leaf on the Wind (You're not tactical, so you'll grant the same bonus from flanking you would from Warlord's Favor if you set up a flanking, and you could also use this to save somebody about to drop.)

Daily:
Bastion of Defense
(You're inspiring, and the other powers are good for things like protection and flanking, which you have some of, so it's preferable to the movement dailies for the temp hitpoints.)

I'll leave the equip to your discretion. ;)

Personally I'd prefer a human, you lose 2 Con (oh noes) but gain an extra Feat, extra class skill (urgh?) and an extra At-Will power, why choose between Wolf Pack Tactics and Commander's Strike when you can have both?

Commander's Strike isn't AS powerful for an Inspiring build, but your Int will still be decent and giving your party's Fighter a free basic melee attack is good however you look at it. Of course it isn't as useful if your Fighter uses a shield. And it's no good for Rangers and Rogues (whose damage comes from their Powers rather than their basic attacks).

Those are good points, especially the last one. If you prefer a third at-will to an effective second encounter, sure, go with human.
As you appear to acknowledge, the extra skill isn't that meaningful for this build. As for the feat, you're going to be up front, and, as has been discussed over on the gleemax forums (Maybe here too? don't recall...), there is some controversy as to whether encounter-long benefits will continue after a warlord drops. (I would submit that they will last, but I could envision errata/advice going either way.) Either way, more hitpoints and bigger surges are always helpful. You could take some extra armor with the feat, and there may be other options you'd prefer as well, but I'd call the trade a discretionary decision, rather than an imperative.

Thank you both, you have given me things to think of.
I was thinking of maybe taking a dragonborn warlord with extended breath and a halbard for a weapon. The image appeal to me  , but you both raise valid points that interest me.

Anyone want to take a shot at a gnome warlord? That's the first character I plan to play when I get the chance. I think I'm going to go charisma based even though the stereotype for gnomes would probably be tactical. Heh, this combo just makes me think of gnome titans.
