Intelligent Apes

Zephrin the Lost

First Post
Thinking of adding a race of intelligent apes to the jungle setting in my campaign. As this would probably be an RP encounter rather than combat, I'm looking for some inspiration to round out the ape's customs, culture and type of settlement to deepen the encounter.

It's 4e, but any older material might serve for inspiration. Where have smart monkeys gotten a write up in D&D or other fantasy RPG?

Thanks!

What are some humans for $200, Alex. ;-)

Wasn't there a group of "planar" apes from Justic League or the like a few years back? You could also base them on some primative cultures with just retaining their simian physiology.

Most real-world apes settle into a fairly standard 'pack' system with 'alphas', dominance games, etc. It might be fun to extrapolate that to intelligent apes, so that they have trading houses and ruling councils in which all the back-biting and corporate-ladder-climbing of our own modern corporations and political bodies is all there - but in this case, formalised and openly accepted as legitimate behaviour.

For WHATEVER reason-there were intelligent seafaring apes, Hadozee, as a PC race in Stormwrack of all places.

I just did not get it.

This might "float your boat".
