That's what I get for reading the article quickly at work. Still, now that I went and re-read it, its premise and the way it's written seem awfully authentic (unlike The Onion).

Still, I think this runs that fine line between madness and genius.

No, really.

I'm not saying that someone who lives completely in a fantasy world, or actually believes that they're "leveling up" isn't a nut-job. But, if you've got a weakness that you're trying to overcome, a tool that works is a good thing. Hey, if I thought it'd help me with tasks I don't like to do and make them more fun or less intimidating, I'd gladly assign myself XP.
