I just stumbled across an interview on The Guardian with N.K. Jemisin, where she discusses the difficulties facing a black woman writing fantasy and scifi.

Great interview, thanks for sharing. Jemisin's work is just so good.

She's not wrong. Look at A Wizard of Earthsea - despite featuring people of color, most of the time the covers whitewash the characters anyway. And Charles Saunders' Imaro has gone in and out many times over the years. I think the increase in diversity we've seen in fantasy and genre fiction over the past few years has been great. The importance of representation in stories is not to be underestimated.

So much a missed opportunity, that miniseries. Studio Ghibli's Tales of Earthsea was closer, and gorgeous-looking, but still not quite right.
