Memes. Seriously. Memes.
If you're not familiar with David Brin's Uplift series (a very good read), there are 5 levels of hyperspacial dimensions one can travel through for FTL travel. The higher the level, the less bound by our notion of universal laws of physics. The highest level, E, is the fastest (usually), but also most dangerous. At this level, reality is abstract and populated by memes. Memes are dangerous to interact with here, as simple observation by an intelligent creature is enough to change them, or the current representation of the plane itself, or both. Physical contact with them is generally a bad thing, as normal matter mixing with a half thought given form doesn't react well. Memes are attracted to intelligence to give them true form, at the same time, they change the physical nature of that creature. Example, a snake-like meme bites an uplifted chimp on the ass, it changes nature and fuses to him as a full tail. That is a tolerable interaction. When traveling through E-space, it's best to go through as quick and short a path as possible to limit interactions.
So, the barriers of hyperspace are breaking down and memes are literally pouring through and warping reality. Hide your lolcats.
