Invisibility and Ioun Stones

Minosis

First Post
This question came up last night, if a character is turned invisible whil he has an ioun stone circling him does the stone also turn invisible or because it is not actually touching is it still visible?

My GM ruled that the stone is still visible, so anyone who wants to confirm or deny this assertion please include a rulebook or WOTC citing or my GM will never believe it.

Thanks

Actually, as I read it in the PHB, they are including gear... I would say that the Ioun stone would be invisible with the character... The other way around that is having to grab the Ioun stone and pocket it, but then you don't get the benefits.

EDIT: Even better... "Any object the target carries that extends more than 10 feet is considered visible". Ioun stones don't fly around at a 10 ft. radius, thus it is invisible from what I see.

Bingo. Also: all your possessions are invisible, and ioun stones are in your possession.

That doesn't mean a GM can't houserule otherwise, though.

Here's the text for invisibility from the SRD, bolded the relevant sentences:

Invisibility said:
The creature or object touched becomes invisible, vanishing from sight, even from darkvision. If the recipient is a creature carrying gear, that vanishes, too. If you cast the spell on someone else, neither you nor your allies can see the subject, unless you can normally see invisible things or you employ magic to do so.

Items dropped or put down by an invisible creature become visible; items picked up disappear if tucked into the clothing or pouches worn by the creature. Light, however, never becomes invisible, although a source of light can become so (thus, the effect is that of a light with no visible source). Any part of an item that the subject carries but that extends more than 10 feet from it becomes visible.

I'd say all attended objects (all the character's gear) vanishes except those that extend beyond 10-feet. I believe an Ioun Stone is still considered an attended object, otherwise the character would not be a legal target for the Ioun Stone's magical effect. So it should vanish as well.

Though, ultimately, the decision is entirely up to your DM.

If your DM rules that an Ioun stone is not "carried," that's a perfectly reasonable interpretation. Your DM is master of your world. What he says goes.

If you're playing with that DM, though, just be very careful to stow your ioun stones before casting Dimension Door, Teleport, Blink, Plane Shift, etc, etc... and stay clear of anything that targets unattended objects or deals area damage.

Lol, oh the repercussions of DM houserules and the spawning of more as result...gotta love 'em. :p

Ioune Stones are great! I don't allow them in my prime campaign, but as soon as the party goes into the planes, they see people with these orbiting objects flying around peoples' heads. Great for flavor but usable only at mid-high to high level.

I rule they go invisible as gear just as they would have to save if the user botched a save.
