Ioun Stone questions...

How about a rogue with maxed out Sleight of Hand? It's a little more difficult to accomplish, but what's the DC to steal someone's boots in the middle of battle?

Man, if a RANDOM Troll could do that, I'd hate to see a Troll MODIFIED to do that would look like.

Well, it would make for an interesting NPC. Someone geared up and optimized for stealing stuff - when the opponent is awake and ready.

Think of the fun this will be for the session while the other players rib the one player for losing his boots to a random troll. And he didn't even get hurt.

Perfect for the mean ole DM who doesn't think an encounter with a gang of ethereal filchers is enough to thoroughly tick off their players. :]

Well, those are pretty hard to take away from someone. You've just got to catch an Ioun stone to make it your own. :)
Yea, in a game where you're allowed to design your own items, there would never be any reason to make any ioun stone when you could just make an identical slotless item that you keep in a pouch with exactly the same effect. The ioun stone limitation (vulnerability) is a really huge one, and I really don't understand why the pricing doesn't refelct that.

Because the core rules don't allow you to design your own items. They allow DMs to design their own items, which is really another thing entirely. In the core rules, Ioun Stones are one of the few slotless items in the game.

Sure, if the DM decides that any and all items one can think of are fair game, then the Ioun Stones become less impressive, but that's not the core assumption.
