Ioun Stones: How many can you have at once?

I've always played that you can stick only one ioun stone on your forehead. I've always liked people with glowing stones stuck to their forehead. (they are still slotless).

Multiple Ioun Stones are good. But if that monk want multiple stats increased, try Belt of Magnificence in Miniatures Handbook.
Right now she has the Monk's belt. I don't have the miniature's handbook, but I don't think she'll want to give up the monk's belt if she has a choice.
-The current plan is to keep gloves of dexterity, the monk's belt, amulet of nat. armor, bracers of armor, ring of protection, and then get an extra +2 to wis and str from ioun stones along with an extra +1 insight bonus to AC. She doesn't dish out the most damage, but with a 20 STR (after str ioun stone) and the monk's belt she will still do enough for them to pay attention to her... even more so when using potions of enlarge person. And an AC of 35+ at level 12 should allow her to survive a few full attacks.

I don't want any of those... how stupid does that look, anyways, to have one of them buggers swirling around your head all the time; and everyone can simply blow them away and you have all the precious money wasted.

No, thank you!

If they were cheaper than real slotless items at least...
I think our party ignores what we look like more than most. We concern ourselves with what we do and say and what our abilities are... that is about it. It would be nice if ioun stones were cheaper, but our party has never tried to get custom items made so I have no idea what the response from the DM would be to a request for a slotless +X Wisdom item. It is quite easy to find anything listed in the DMG though... (excluding artifacts).

I think Thanee was remarking more upon how insanely easy it is to break ioun stones.. not to mention they are very prominent to anyone looking. If I was fighting a BBEG with a bunch of stones, I might just shatter a few to soften him up.

ioun stones are generally pretty weak so not hard to break (note, they should still be treated as attended and gain all benefits as such, so no area of effect spells taking them all out) but any attack against an ioun stone is one less against the person with the stone. So, while it may cost them money it may just save their life, sounds like a good trade ;) I should get a bunch, make them look very flashy and dangerous (but actually just cheap knockoffs, and 'hope' that someone will attack them instead of my guy! ;)

Hehe, my group sure doesn't agree. They would much rather die themselves than suffer from a sundered weapon or magic item (especially ioun stones). Moreso now, with the use of Revivify from the Mini's Handbook. Some adventurer's! ;)

Incidently, are Ioun stones considered attended objects? If yes, then can they be targetted for a sunder at AC 24, hardness 5, 10 hitpoints? How about cleaving sunder? (I think that's a feat ;)). Does targeting an Ioun stone for a sunder draw an attack of opportunity*?

Action: Sunder an object (attack)
Draws AoO: If the object is being held, carried, or worn by a creature, yes. If not, no.

Ioun Stones: These crystalline stones always float in the air and must be within 3 feet of their owner to be of any use. When a character first acquires a stone, she must hold it and then release it, whereupon it takes up a circling orbit 1d3 feet from her head. Thereafter, a stone must be grasped or netted to separate it from its owner. The owner may voluntarily seize and stow a stone (to keep it safe while she is sleeping, for example), but she loses the benefits of the stone during that time. Ioun stones have AC 24, 10 hit points, and hardness 5.
Moderate varied; CL 12th; Craft Wondrous Item, creator must be 12th level.

Do all ioun stones automatically go the same speed and float at the same height above your head? If yes, is there an actual explanation for it or just something you assume to happen?

If they werent then their saves would be worse, at least some of the times, and they could be attacked anytime anyway (one can always attack an unattended object so long as it is out in the open, I think we will all agree that ioun stones tend to be out in the open ;) ).

If you can only use one, how are they still slotless? :heh:

Because slotless is a limited item slot? Er... no... wait... ;)

I've always wanted to some day have a character who just collected a whole mess of burnt out ioun stones, and painted 'em up to look like a globe of the world when set up in the proper configuration. No game effect, just lookin' neat with a little model of the world rotating merrily along where your head should be.

:D
