I'm one of those folks who are definitely buying Iron Lore when it hits the shelf this year. While my group of purist D&D players are unlikely to play the game, Malhavoc has really opened a can of worms to challenge the orthodoxy on how the game can be turned into a better one.
Amongst some of the design changes, I particularly liked :
a) Fixed and variable components to hit points.
b) Tokens, a cross between Action points and the White Wolf willpower system designed to encourage a mode of play.
c) Traits
I'm sure there are a lot more interesting facets to Iron Lore by what strikes me is whether is it possible to adopt this design philsophy to the core rules and rewrite the core classes in an "Iron Lore" way.
Example :
Rangers get tokens for surveying terrain like a hunter but also when fighting favoured enemies. Paladins get tokens for charitable deeds, defending the helpless, jumping into an allie's defense. Fighters actually break down into the Iron Lore Classes.
All races get a basic watered down list of physical traits ( Size, special vision ) but get a menu of traits to choose from to allow customization.
If it can be legalized, this would be a very fun project to lead over the Internet.
