D&D 4E Is 4E winning you or losing you?

Mostly positive. I gave up running 3.5 some years ago due to issues like magic items and it's nice to see that addressed.

However, there's a few weird things, such as (seemingly) not enough playtesting - again - or improper playtesting with non-core materials. I thought the DnD division was solvent enough to playtest things for a year. The PH is coming out next May; WotC shouldn't even know when playtesting is going to be done because it isn't omniscient and won't see all the issues coming up.

I've gone from surprised, to gloomy, and now to solidly middle-of-the-road. At this point, the devil's in the details, and it could be either really bad to my liking, or fantastic to my liking, all down to what the specifics are, which none of us have.

At the start I was interested but moderately skeptical, assuming this would be 3.75 only now with actual miniatures reliance (rather than just being psycho obsessed with them), more nerf nerf nerfing of spells which have any remotely interesting effect, and continuation of other annoying 3.5E trends.

Then, early information about 4E sounded very "MMORPG"-like, and I was even more concerned, worried that they were redesigning D&D specifically so it could be incorporated into computer games/MMOs better, and/or play more like/exactly like World of Warcraft.

However, the more information that comes out for 4E, the further it seems to go away from these negative traits, at least at the present time. I like the new "fluffier" ideas, I like the Tieflings and Eladrin, I welcome our new W4rlords, and even the roles seem kinda good now. I like per-encounter, and I'm pleased to hear them say multi-classing will be "improved". My biggest worry is that they'll go psycho-crazy with the schools and shove them into every element of the game the point where they become very irritating, and have to be extricated in 4.5E or 5E.

So I'd say I've gone from skeptical > very concerned > pretty happy with where it seems to be going.

Thinking back to 2E > 3E, I remember a lot of people started optimistic, got mad with 3E, but since then seem to have been major members of the 3E community, so I'm not over-worried about anyone running around shrieking just yet.

I thrive on change and am looking very much forward to 4th Edition.

In general, I think that D&D is in the hands of competent designers/developers who care very deeply about the future of the game. I trust that they'll do a solid job of the next edition, and I've been very heartened by the level of debate and discussion their blogs have promoted. Clearly, they are paying close attention to all of our discussions. That can only be a good thing.

Even if I end up not liking every single change that is made, I'm betting that D&D 4 will still be a fun game that I enjoy playing.

I do laud some of their goals.

But the apparently conscious goal to "till under" a great many D&D conventions on which my game is built has me seething.

If I can add my thoughts on the DI to 4E, my feelings are a lot worse. I DO NOT LIKE pdfs, I do not like reading pages of text on the computer, and I do not have time to sit and set up a virtual tabletop with people in different time zones (I live in Japan, 15 hours ahead of most of my fellow Americans) So I will not be using it.

But a lot of what I am used to using form Wizards will be up there.

Same reason I was mad at WOW, and other online only games. They look cool, but why can't they have a playable version in the box? And the price is the same as for a regular game, PLUS th additional cost.

That is just not acceptable to me. So it looks like I will be missing out on a big piece of 4E, which makes me mroe likely to not pickup the rest.

With very little info so far, I've shifted from excited to neutral. The designers have focused more on talking about how they're going to change things I love about the game than how they're going to actually improve the mechanics. Until there is some actual crunch to the previews, I can't make a judgement one way or the other on whether I might buy 4th edition.

My feelings on this as well.

4th Edition pretty much lost me out of the gate when I discovered that it was going to be radically different and basically incompatible with my 3.5 material.

That said I've still been following the blogs and development articles in order to make an attempt at giving it a fair shot. I'm still not liking it for a bunch of reasons, there are some things that seem kind of cool but for the most part it seems that 4E is not for me. At this point I normally would just shell out for the PHB and make my judgement, but this time I think that I'll wait for the 4E SRD.
