Is a 45 point buy too much?

Everything's going to be fine as long as you keep in mind that they are way above average. You can have some fun with this actually ; you can adjust monsters and npcs to take advantage of a 45 point buy. It WILL be more work for you, however.

My games always tend to be high stated, with rolled stats averaging out at around 40 points. I've not had any problems with it yet, but my parties tend to be pretty small (2 or 3 PCs).

I use 40 points in my games.

At first I thought it might have been a bit too much.
But after a few sessions I realized that all I had to do was throw tougher challenges at them

Well my way of handling it wasn't increasing the base price but changing the amounts a character would recieve at that level, thus modifying SLIGHTLY the chance of them getting better than normal equipment, but not ALL of it magical.

As I also stated, there's very little in the way of arcane power, so I'm not terrible concerned JUST yet.

I do thank you guys for offering me your advice. I've used 32 point buy on some of my characters. It was okay but not anything specatularly different from the ones I already have played.

100 will get through to the second round, writing the ten page sample.
If there were 1000 entries, there would be 10% chance to get through to the next round. (Speaking statistically, forgetting that loads'll be chucked in the bin)
But there will likely be more, in which case it will be lower percentage.

Then, after that, ten people will be selected to go through to make 100 page setting bibles. Then you chances are 1 in 10.

You're in the wrong thread.:p

My Wot game uses 45 point buy, they are after all involved in an epic campaign. I wanted to simulate characters that were Greek Hero - type of powerful. Would not do it normally, but it has worked really well this go.

I used the 5d6 - discard two lowest - option from the DMG in my first 3E Campaign (because I wanted to feel the limits of the system) and had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. Few players had poor ability scores (one did manage to roll up a 6 though :D) of course but the game was just as deadly as it used to be. Making the adjustment is incredible easy. Now I use the normal 4d6 discard lowest method but if someone rolls up all 18s (a freak occurence of course) in front of my eyes, I have no problem with that. It's a challenge for me - nothing more....
