Is a kobold a suitable PC race ?

Starting up a new game and I have a player that wants to play a kobold.

It just seems like a really...weak race though, and I'm worried he's going to be at a disadvantage compared to the other players. Does anyone have any experience playing a kobold, and would it be worthwhile to give him a little boost to even him out with other la+0 races ?

I've been told Races of the Dragon offers kobold-specific options which could be considered overpowered on their own, in order to help a kobold PC catch up with the others.

Of course, it still depends on what your player wants to play: a kobold barbarian probably isn't going to match up with his human counterpart no matter what you do, but a kobold sorcerer might.

Wow, i have no idea how I missed your thread before.

I just ran couple week mini campaign with an all kobold party. Speed, darkvision, and natural armor, along with to hit benes from size make it a formibadle match for any non-melee class. YMMV

They work fine for casters, and decently for rogues. I've never had one in my party, as my party tends to stay with PHB races, but I might allow them. Races of the Dragon can beef them up quite a bit. thye can be eve mroe powerful with Venerable age and some cheese.
