D&D 5E Is a magic weapon worth a feat?

GreyLord

Legend
Helm of Infinite Wishes...absolutely worth it for a feat.

Ring of Immortal Immunity (nothing can hurt or damage you...ever...no loss of HP, no lose of ability scores...etc...)...absolutely worth it for a feat.

+1 weapon that never increases it's bonuses...absolutely NOT worth it for a feat...

A minor point: Stats cap out at 20. A magical weapon effectively increases said cap for attack purposes. So, certainly worth it to say a Fighter who has already caped Str or Dex as appropriate. However, the fact that an item can be lost while a feat can not does create balance issues.

In the context of character creation, if someone wanted to start with a cool magic item, I'd make him forego his free starting feat (a common houserule) or his vuman feat to have it. It would need to be intertwined with his backstory and would start around a +1 weapon and progressively increase in power narratively to follow the power level of the group. It should always be "one step above" to maintain specificity. It couldn't be taken away anymore than a feat but it could imply some GM-determined backside. "You're holding your grandfather's sword who was used to cut the finger of Sauron... as you learn to wield it to full effect by replicating your ancestor's deed, its full power will come into light" (and that Sauron guy has requested an urgent appointment with you BTW). Just kidding, I wouldn't make it detrimental, but story propelling for the character arc.
