Is a simulacrum a construct?

Hrm, must be my silly interpretation then ;)

It is instantaneous though, so it shouldn't be effected by fireball as long as it wasn't created in the antimagic field

As for Hide Life, it depends on how you interpret it. I personally interpret it as the spell effecting the receptacle (storing the caster's soul in it), so therefore, if the caster was below -10 hp and the receptacle was in an antimagic field just then, then the caster would die-where as, if you see it as the caster being effected by the spell, then the caster would simply die if he entered the antimagic field, and when its away he would remain dead since the soul would have fled the receptacle before then (IMO, of course).

There is an Encylcopedia Arcana book from Mongoose on Constructs that has a variety of simulacrum templates in it, but that's not really official, either.

Okay, a few more related questions:

Is a simulacrum subject to charm/dominate person? After all, it's under the 'complete control' of its creator.

How about detect thoughts? Does it constitute a 'thinking mind' in this context?

What about a simulacrum casting simulacrum? I know it costs xp to cast, but while a sim can't become more powerful there's nothing that says it can't spend xp, especially if the 51-60% of the creator's levels is interpeted to include xp.

(If anyone wants to see where this is going, check out my story hour, To War Against Felenga- link in my sig.)

I'd say no, but there are some enchantments that effect constructs (including golems), taking away their master's control in the process, but again, these are supplements (there's one in Divine and the Defeated by S&S) The simulacrums in your storyhour include some very high level casters, they could develope a spell that changed this.

I'd say so, they do have a % of their master's knowledge, and they don't have int -, so they can think.

Er, to prevent the munchkiness of simulacrums casting wishes and stuff for their master at epic levels I just ruled that Simulacrums have no experience at all. But that's a house rule...

Remember though, you can just do whatever you think is right for your campaign, if it is needed in the plot.
