And even then, you could easily pick 2 cantrips and a 1st level spell, that is useful for a barbarian. Lets say: Cantrips: Mending Prestidigitation 1st level spell: find familiar Reasoning: mending to fix your equipment Prestidigitation to help woth survival (two tricks learned in a former life) A familiar is always nice to have. For scouting around. Neither of those spells is combat related, so no problems with rage, but bring quite some utility. +2 con, +1 wis Edit: So you start with Str 15 Dex 12 Con 16 Int 10 Wis 14 Cha 8 You were a sage that was rather wise than booknsmart. But even though you learned not that fast, you were able to work through a lot of nights to keep up. To help you concentrate and keep you awake, you used to work out a bit. Even though you did not talk a lot to other people and were a bit awkward, you were quite adept at aquiring knowledge on travels by observing. On one such travel, your ship crashed and you had to get along in the wild. Your familiar helped you hunting. Making fire was also not a problem. You could mend a few items that helped you surviving. After a while, you learned how to live int the nature and And of defending against beast with your channeled strength. Eventually you bond with nature spirits. So you became a wildheart barbarian. I bet at level 4 a nice feat like great weapon fighting or so will allow you to keep up with most other barbarians. And in this way, sage is not only a tag you put on your character without actually picking skills or feats that fit, but also having stats and skills and a feat to match.
