D&D (2024) Is anyone going to use the new 2024 backgrounds?

This article linked below has some info on character creation. In the discussion it talks about using a legacy background if you don't like the new ones and just picking 3 ability scores and picking an Origin feat.

With this being the case I don't see why anyone would use the more restrictive 2024 backgrounds.

Instead of taking sailor from the 2024, go with Marine from the Saltmarsh and get the Charisma bonus, Intelligence bonus and Lucky Feat you want to go with it.

I'd argue the overwhelming majority will use out of the box rules, including the new backgrounds.

Yeah, I'm not seeing any benefits of the 5.5e backgrounds except speed. I find most players do value speed...but if five extra minutes will get them a leg up, many will at least look into it.

Seems to me that there's really no reason not to use the "convert an old background" option. Especially since, with only 16, there are lots of them out there folks won't even have a newer alternative.

I expect a lot of tables will go for simplicity and only play with 5.5 content. And of course new gamers will only have the 5.5 books and not know the older backgrounds existed.

And some tables will deliberately ban the old background since they're not consistently designed and the features they grant are all over the place, like how the Outlander removes any chance of starving or getting lost in the wilds.

My players pretty much always use out-of-the-box rules. they are neither optimisers nor such hardcore role-players that they need something custom to support their concepts.

I don't think it's likely that we will be rushing to adopt the new rules though, not because we don't like them, but because of cost.

I’ll probably just use custom backgrounds. Pick +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1, two skills, a language, a tool, an origin feat, and 50 gp. Easy. The default backgrounds are examples, and if one of them happens to suit what you want, go ahead and take it as-is. But honestly I feel like reading through them all would take longer than just making a custom one.
