D&D (2024) Is anyone going to use the new 2024 backgrounds?

Armor should cause spell failure chance, bah.

It's impossible to tell how many people are persuaded by something. Just have to put the writing out there and it will do what it will. Many people have already stated their opinion in this thread though about their dislikes with the system. You can stop acting like my opinion is solitary.
Naw, that's not what I said or am saying. I said you're not changing minds by bashing what people like, and failing to advocate for alternatives you do like. Saying there are others unhappy already isn't you changing their minds.
That's none of your concern. People are busy with other things in life.
But you're too late! The time to change these rules was when they were asking for opinions about these rules from you! Waiting until after they're done to start saying you want them changed does nothing anymore. Even 4e lasted 4 years. So what, are you just going to try to make everyone miserable here who likes the game for 4 years until they listen to you and make the changes you want?

That is a niche case for a Wizard or Sorcerer without armor proficiency. For the vast majority of characters shield is better.
In pretty much every game I've played, wizards and sorcerers with armor proficiencies are the niche cases, not the other way round. Every wizard I've played or had in the party (either as a fellow party member or as a DM) has made copious and continual use of mage armor until they had magical items that superceded it (sorcerers have been more reluctant to take it due to their limited spell list).

Wizards and Sorcerers combined only account for about 15% of PCs and every other class gets armor proficiency* as part of their class. As such, the vast majority of PCs, including over 75% of the caster PCs have armor proficiency.

We are talking about the Magic Initiate feat here, it is a very small percentage of PCs that would benefit from Mage Armor through that feat, especially since both Wizards and Sorcerers (the only classes without armor) already have it on their class spell list.

As I said getting Mage Armor through the MI feat would be a small niche case for a Wizard or Sorcerer without Armor proficiency. The vast majority of characters would get more benefit from shield.

*note - Monks technically don't get armor proficiency either, but niether would they generally benefit from Mage Armor

Still once per day shield is not great, and you need a free hand to cast it.
If you rely on it, it is a very big resource sink. But a life saver of course.

I wish it would have been toned down a bit. But it is not that terrible.
