D&D (2024) 2024 PHB - A much too early review

Or the other option... start with the game now and just remember that playing Rules As Written is a waste of a person's time and creativity and instead just make up some new Backgrounds right now that work better for them (even without the DMG having been released to "give permission" for a person to do it.)
Kind of an argument to not bother with the new rules at all really.

Lots of player of the game never buy the DMG so will never have access. So having rules in the DMG isn't a fix.

Also page 177 of the PHB doesn't in any way direct players to the DMG or to talk to the DM about it.

The side bar in page 38 mixed in with ability score info and gives you permission to pick a 2014 background but you have to own the 2014 book.

Self containing all the rules and options in one book makes it easier for all players and especially new players who are less likely to understand that houserules are and option.

Yes I can figure it out, yes I have decades of play experience and understand rules are just guidelines. But in the interest of making a more versatile system and and easier in future printing they should add a sidebar to page 177 to help new players.
Since they're not planning on continuing to sell the 5.0 rules, it seems odd that the 5.5 rules refer to them.

Only really in this one place that I could find.

It's an odd choice and while I appreciate it opens up the ability to pick my background feat, I feel like they would have been better served not referencing 2014 rules or referencing them more.

There is also the "What's new in the 2024 version" sidebar at the beginning of the book, which begins with: "This is the 2024 version of the fifth edition Player’s Handbook. If you’ve read the 2014 version, much of this book will feel familiar, since the fundamental rules of the game are the same. But the book contains many new or redesigned elements ..."
