D&D (2024) Twin Spell 2014 vs 2024

i think this is a real shame of a change, the new twinned is thematically underwhelming IMO, before when you twinned a spell your sorcerer was really doing something only they could do! weaving their magic to cast a spell at two targets at once for a spell that normally couldn't do that, now it feels like a glorified upcasting for a niche selection of spells.

twin-haste is exactly the sort of magic-twisting nonsense a sorcerer should be able to pull off compared to the wizard with their extensive library of spells or warlock's pact magic.
this,
metamagic was only thing that sorcerer could say to wizard; I'm better than you for this kind of job.

that is really the dumbest reason ever if it is true.

we played that every spell can be twinned with rule that no target can be affected twice. simple. works.

twin fireball? Sure in theory you can affect 2 areas instead of one. In how many battles will that matter?
And your BBEG will still only get one instance of damage.
You had to completely change the effect of the Twin Spell ability entirely to make it work for your group. Thats EXACTLY the reason why twin spell was changed.

i didn't see them say they NEEDED to change it to make it work, or that they found it complicated

a vast majority of houserules are used purely for personal preference.

I had a lot of fun twinning bullpucky with my sorcerer, but the fact I literally couldn't figure out how to do it without a list found on Reddit spoke volumes. It was OP. It absolutely wanted you to Nova and rest. It was bad design. But it was so fun.

That said, the new version is crap. Not even worth the choice. But like divine smite, it was the bitter pill that needed to be swallowed in order to fix the DPS nuclear bombs and allow the rest of the class to be well rounded.

2 problems with 2014 twin spell

1. It sucked down sorcery points way to quickly
2. It outright doubled the effectiveness of some already very strong buff spells for the same action economy. Essentially it let you cast 2 spells on the same turn.

For spells like hold person, fly, banishment and hold monster the new twin spell is really good. Tasha’s hideous laughter is not a sorcerer spell but can be picked up with something like magic initiate and will make for one of the best spells for the new twin spell.

what complete change. It's still twin effect. and much simpler than 2014 rules.
Idk man,

"When you cast a spell, you can spend a number of sorcery points equal to the spell's level to cast it a second time, but a each creature may be subjected to the spells' effects only once."

sounds pretty different from

"When you cast a spell that targets only one creature and doesn't have a range of self, you can spend a number of sorcery points equal to the spell's level to target a second creature in range with the same spell (1 sorcery point if the spell is a cantrip). To be eligible, a spell must be incapable of targeting more than one creature at the spell's current level. For example, magic missile and scorching ray aren't eligible, but ray of frost and chromatic orb are."
