D&D (2024) Twin Spell 2014 vs 2024

They nerfed the twin haste combo which I don't mind.

Herees my problem. The resident sorcerer player was excited about 2024 until they "killed" twin spell. There's not much you can actually twin now.

In the post BG3 meta I have had a Sorcerer player every game. And they're twinning chromatic orb rarely ice knife. Curse of Strahd they were twinning dragons breath. 3 games in a row anyway.

This is mostly low level ones btw. Before they start twinning haste or whatever.

On Sunday my youngest player who is 13 was controlling his dad's sorcerer. Dad's in hospital getting an operation. We told him about twin haste so he did that on his life cleric and dad's sorcerer. Dad said he coul run dad's sorcerer.

Monday night rolled around and I contacted his dad in hospital. Turns out his kid had a blast and was telling his dad about how great it was..

My more advanced players are in Castles and Crusades game. I advertised a newbie friendly game and are doing that. Problem is 5/6 are familiar with BG3, some cant afford the new PHB atm, one didn't know and recently bought SCAG, Xanathars, Tashas.

Anyway that change might mean 5E 2014 might soldier on for a bit longer. We only have 1 phb 2014. No 2024 phb made it onto the shelf. We have more 2014 phb than players (I own 3 another owns 2).

So leaning towards 2024 being used on a case by case basis in 2014. Where the rules conflict 2014 will be used unless exceptions have been made (mostly 2024 classes 2014 races, feats, spells). New spells filling holes eg Sorcerous Blast can be used.

What are others doing if you're planning on mixing 2014/2024 short term?

I'm between games at the moment, and won't be running again until the DMG comes out, but I most likely wouldn't switch rulesets mid-campaign unless my players were really clamouring for it. And in that instance I'd switch fully.

Regarding Twinned Spell in particular, it's cheaper now for anything but first level spells, and while it may be more limited, the 2024 sorcerer is otherwise so improved that I certainly wouldn't stick with the 2014 one just for the sake of that metamagic option.

Of all the changes to 2024, this is the one I am most upset about.

The reason is they completely killed this. Was it OP? Maybe a little, but not nearly as OP as some spells and abilities they did not nerf and IME it is not something that was widely abused.

The most powerful spells are not things that target single enemies and when something got twinned, there was usually a more effective spell that was not cast.

There are so few spells that can be 'twinned' now, that I think this metamagic is probably not worth taking in 2024.

Sorcerer Spells (PHB only)

1st level: Charm Person, Jump, Longstrider

2nd level: Blindness/Deafness, Enhance Ability, Hold Person, Invisibility, Spider Climb

3rd level: Fly, Gaseous Form

4th level: Banishment, Charm Monster, Freedom of Movement

5th level: Hold Monster

In the interest of balance however, it's probably worth noting that neither Ice Knife nor Dragon's Breath were twinnable in 2014, as they both effect multiple targets, as confirmed by Jeremy Crawford.

i think this is a real shame of a change, the new twinned is thematically underwhelming IMO, before when you twinned a spell your sorcerer was really doing something only they could do! weaving their magic to cast a spell at two targets at once for a spell that normally couldn't do that, now it feels like a glorified upcasting for a niche selection of spells.

twin-haste is exactly the sort of magic-twisting nonsense a sorcerer should be able to pull off compared to the wizard with their extensive library of spells or warlock's pact magic.

Honestly the main reason they changed it, imo, is not that it was too powerful, but that it was too confusing what did and didn't quality for twinned.
that is really the dumbest reason ever if it is true.

we played that every spell can be twinned with rule that no target can be affected twice. simple. works.

twin fireball? Sure in theory you can affect 2 areas instead of one. In how many battles will that matter?
And your BBEG will still only get one instance of damage.
