Is D20 Future going to use D20M rules?

Or is it going to be a stand alone product? I am more excited about this product than urban arcana as I play a modern game to change the pace from fantasy.

Yes, the Modern book uses D20 Modern rules. Its supposed to be an add-on book for running any of a number of "styles" of sci-fi games, but not a setting by itself. Hopefuly it doesn't spend any/much time talking about magic mixed with science kind of stuff, and just sticks to science & pseudo-science.

I doubt they would allocate half the product's content toward magic and fantasy. Nevertheless, it should be available as a helpful option alongside spaceships and cyberware, since Urban Arcana does not have such material.

Personally, I have no problem with it, as long the material does not overshadow the primary use of d20 Future application for futuristic roleplaying.

personally, i'd prefer there be no magic in d20 Future. d20's got enough fantasy books out already.

i'm still a bit peeved that they went with two magical campaign settings in d20 Modern (three, really -- psionics is just another kind of magic), and threw out Genetech.

i bought Modern to get away from magical settings. though, given the popularity of Urban Arcana, i must be in the minority...

My sentiments exactly. I was dissappointed that there were no example realistic settings without all the fantasy elements.

I wish they would have come out with the future setting before Urban Arcana, but UA predates D20M. As a result, it came out first.

I too hope they leave magic out of the future book. Stick to cybernetic replacement bodies, mecha, and neural-net-links, thank you. :D

Gang, just remove or ignore the FX elements, okay?

Personally, I think it is a smart business move. The modern fantasy FX allow easy transition for D&D gamers, the psionic FX allow for use because it is this supernatural element that is more plausible and acceptable in the modern world. As for horror, you got a chalk it up to the popularity of Buffy, Angel, and other yet short-lived copycats (like Special Unit 2).

As for Genetech, it was an unfortunate casualty, but aside from me, who would buy a rulebook for $45? Who could accept Wizards publishing a $45 core rulebook with all FOUR campaign models?

We should be lucky that Paizo printed the Genetech material in an issue of Polyhedron.

i don't mind the magic and psionics rules in the d20 Modern rulebook. you are right, the game would be worse off without them.

what i was specifically saying was that i would have preferred they had dropped one of the two magic campaign models for one that didn't use any FX.

so that instead of 2 magic campaigns and 1 psionic campaign, there'd be 1 magic campaign, 1 psionic campaign, and 1 biotech / non-FX campaign. that would've better showed just how diverse d20 Modern can be. from what we got in the core rulebook, it doesn't look like the designers think it's possible to play d20 Modern without the FX.

[Disclaimer]
Well, I'm not one of the people that demands a rulebook not be released just because it's not something I'll use, or something I disagree with for some reason (witness the people who didn't want WoTC to release a deity book). Denying other people material for such reasons is selfish at best.

I don't have any problem with magic having been included in the D20M core book, and I bought UA, so I obviously don't mind that. I'm just far more interested in (near)future rules and I think they should leave magic out of that.
After all, how different would "future" magic be?* I'd prefer it if they'd focus on new material rather than rehash magic in yet another setting. I'm pretty sure we can take what's in UA and D20M and apply it to the future stuff if we need it.

*Yeah, yeah. I'm sure they could come up with something magical to combine with cybernetics, netrunning, mechs or whatever they have in the book. Put it in a web enhancement or something. It can't take up that much space. :)
