Is Disintegrate a "Death Spell"

In other words, would a Death Ward automatically negate a disintegrate.

I have been playing with it as being able to negate it, since disintegrate is a one-shot death spell, but is there any official way of determining which spells ARE death spells?

With a Death Spell, you die. With Disintegrate, you are turned to dust.

Same end result (roughly), but a different effect.

Death Magic

"Death Spells" are spells that directly affect the lifeforce/soul of the target.

Disintigrate only affects the physical aspect of the target.

Finger of Death wouldn't affect an Animated table or chair; Disintigrate wood!

Uhh, okaaay, but why not?

It fits all the "requirements"

The major difference between disintegrate and, say, slay living or finger of death, is that disintegrate destroys matter of any kind, and the others attempt to snuff out the life force of creatures.

Note that disintegrate is a transmutation spell, and the other two I mention are necromancy [death] spells.

Different means...sometimes to the same end :-0)

Well, in terms of affecting undead, Disintegrate does affect them since it also effects items. That, and all Death magic spells will have the [Death] descriptor tacked on after their school, but Disintegrate does not.

So what kind of protection can one get vs. disintegrate?

Seems overly powerful for a 6th if there are no proreactive measures to be had short of wish or miracle...

Re

Make your Fort save...That is all I know of that protects against disintegrate. Ring of spell turning and a few other magic items can protect against it. If your DM allows it, become a Chosen of Mystra. They are immune to disintegrate.

Disintegrate is a powerful spell. I wish it worked on golems.

Dodge the ray. A high ranged touch attack helps against Disintegrate.

Alternatively, a threatening display with an iron pipe whenever the DM mentions a green ray may also help protecting your PC from disintegration... ;)
