Is it just me, or are the Munchkin card games rather lame?

It's not supposed to last more than 30 games or so!

Try a more complex game if you are looking for a more durable gaming experience. Like Power Grid or Caylus or Ys or Princes of Florence or St. Petersburg.

Once you're past the jokes, Munckin IS pretty lame.

I don't expect incredible strategic depth(try Catan/Puerto Rico for that) but I do expect a game to have simple, elegant mechanics that make it fun to play even if it's not the deepest game in the world.

Munchkin has TERRIBLE mechanics, and lasts way too long to be fun. The jokes on the cards are pretty funny the first time, though. :)

Munchkin lame? Are you crazy? When I tire of beating masters in chess, I take on the real challenge of Munchkin. Don't let the artwork and jokes fool you, the intricate strategy involved in this game is intense.

No, not really, Muchkin is just a fun way to kill some time with friends. Nothing more.

I agree on all points.

For the intended audience, the play-time is the drawback. For what SHOULD be beer-and-pretzels fun (IMHO), the longish play-time is ENTIRELY out-of-whack.

(And, not to derail the thread, but I feel largely the same way about the OotS board-game. The play time and convoluted rules takes away from the enjoyment of a game about stick-figures. When I picked up the game, I was NOT expecting "Talisman" redux.)

Depends on the number of players, in my opinion. It's fairly smooth with up to four players, but beyond that the game can really drag on.

Anyway, just my personal opinion, but I finally realized recently that these games contain far less substance than they might seem to at first glance. They're basically a one-joke pony that gets old incredibly fast, especially if you're looking for a game with any degree of strategy and depth.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Munchkin is a fun romp when introducing new people to it, but tends to drag after the initial amusement value fades. Plus, as a dogpile game, it can get very frustrating for some players.

When one player gets to level 9, all the others dogpile him and subsequently ignore anyone with a score lower than 9, which in turn leads to everyone being at level 9 before long, at which point it's just luck who happens to draw a monster that they can defeat.
The game plays very differently when you use our Munchkin motto: "Stab early, stab often."
