Is it my imagination, or...

Is it my imagination or has there been a HUGE uptick in the number of threads relating to "back in the day," 0e, 1e, Basic, etc.? I started noticing it about a week ago, although it seems like it was going on to a lesser degree a bit earlier.

I imagine it's just a fluke or a temporary topic-fad, but I'm enjoying it. Everything has been very free of edition wars (and people trying to start them), and they have an interesting range of thoughts in them. A very different feel to them when everyone's not being forced onto the defensive in all directions. It's an odd thing, though, to have so many threads all crop up at once.

I don't think it's odd at all. One topic leads to another related topic, etc.

not new at all.

they aren't free of edition wars

and

you are seeing because you want to... if i can draw a conclusion from your sig.

It's not because I want to, but it might be that I wasn't paying as much attention before. For the reason you mention. :)

EDIT: but I really don't think so. I think there's been a big increase.

6 threads (not counting this one) out of 50 (not counting the sticky) on the front page that seem to be older editions. 12%.

Is that a lot? <shrug>

You kids get off my lawn. :p I think it may be a topic fad.

Happy Gaming!

I concur

I have noticed it as well. While not totally E-war free (an occassional foray into the Nostalgia fight) it has been very civil I think. And it has made me want to find a group in my area playing an older version or Retro-version. My group is not much interested.

I think it's pretty much because of Quasqueton's levelling thread. New discussions fork from there. :)

A few months back, there was a large amount of retro-clone interest, too.

I'd say there's still a healthy amount of interest on ENWorld about games which aren't 3e or 4e, too, so plenty of people want to contribute. I know I'm running both a 1e and a 4e game right now, so I love talking about both of them.

I don't think it's just you. I do think that there have been both more 'old school' threads lately and I think that they have been far more civil. There are still edition wars, of course, but they seem to be relatively calm compared to those of even a few months back.

I believe that no small amount of thanks for this is due the old school fans who don't feel the need to turn every old school thread into a "Old versus New! Die! Die! Die!" screaming match and the moderators who lock those same threads. So, to those folks: Thanks! :D

Also, I can't discount the possibility that several Edition Warriors proudly announcing they were moving their bookmarks might have something to do with the current downward trend in open animosity.

We'll see how long it lasts. ;)

To be honest? When I started this thread, I halfway expected a general sort of "get over it, grandpa!" sort of dogpile. (Note I didn't post it with the intention of provoking that, I was just worried that it'd come to it.)

I was mildly surprised and pleased to see that it never went that way.

The positivity that AD&D and original D&D get, discussion-wise, around these parts is encouraging.

I mean, there is a lot of "Oh man that thing about [older edition of D&D] was so screwed up..." here and again, but hey, it's a 3e/43 fansite primarily, and I accept that going in nowadays. It keeps my blood pressure lower.
