Is it possible to link to specific posts?

Rune

Once A Fool
I'd like to include a table of contents in a story hour. Is it possible to link to specific posts, and, if so, how is it done?

Just above the content of your post, on the right hand side, there is a "permalink" link... click that and it will add the post # to the URL you are on. If you copy your updated URL that is the URL that will take people directly to that specific post ;)

Another thing you can do (which is better in case the forum structure reorganizes, like it did a year or two ago) is take that post number and use a {post=#}text{/post} tag (changing { to [ etc). That will also link directly to the post. Your previous post is here.

The permalink doesn't work the same way for everyone, because it depends on your own forum settings. So it might be better to use the number link next it. That can only change if the thread changes (posts removed, or the thread merged with another).

It doesn't? How so?
I don't know the specific reason, but I have changed my settings from the default, and I when I try to use permalinks posted by other users I get the wrong one if I'm logged in. If I'm not logged in I get the one they meant. Might have something to do with how many posts per page you want to see.

That's weird.

Doing some quick testing, I've found that the "permalink" link is currently tied to the page of the post. That is, the link it formed with that information within. I tested changing the page number but leaving the post the same, and the link always brought me to the first post on the indicated page. Is this what happens for you?

The "number link" link isn't a great idea for a table of contents; it only shows that post, not the whole thread.

Ideally, the permalink should contain two pieces of information; thread and post. From those it should be pulling up the page based on the user's indicated setting for posts/page (PPP). That is, the page is determined by (POST / PPP), rounded up.

(EDIT) Removed a misleading line. Rather, it seems to be determining the page based on the settings of whomever creates the link.

It usually takes me within vicinity of the post, but sometimes on very long threads it can be several pages off.

Thanks, guys. What I'll probably do is arrange things with both options and advice on which to click (and, likely, to do so in a new tab, in the case of the post number), like so:

Chapter 1 Post #3
