Is it rude to take gamer "applications" when adding new players to a group?

My current solicitation for players includes a request for information about a couple of characters the player has played in the past. I haven't gotten any nibbles, but this will hopefully how they describe their characters will give me an index about the general level of munch/powergame present-

I don't see a problem with it. I think that also having new people on a trial period to allow them to see if the group is what they want and if the group wants them is acceptable - but must be phrased well.
