Ah, I don't use Avant, and it's not something I've tested for my company, I had no idea it required the IE Shell.

Technically, it just uses IE's rendering engine - the part that displays web pages. The interface and how it decides what to render is done by the Avant shell, which means a good chunk of the security issues are handled by Avant's code rather than IE's. Still, I don't know how vulnerable it is. I prefer Firefox. It's safer AND faster than IE.
