D&D 5E Is the only purpose of a spellcasting focus to eschew common material components?

I still like the idea of magic item foci that augment your casting in some way. We've seen WotC put out a lot of wands and staves that have an effect in addition to being able to be used as a focus, but I was hoping for something neat like "When you prepare spells spells while attuned to this wand, you may prepare up to 3 additional spells. Any spells prepared in this way must be necromancy spells and you must be holding this wand to cast them."
It could be useful to keep Raise Thread prepared, in case you need to reanimate a conversation from 2014.:p
You're definitely correct Taufairy, it's a good idea to keep a component pouch on you even if you use a focus. It is a non-negligible cost for lower level characters though; most probably won't want to pay 25gp (more than even the most expensive focus) for something that is redundant with something you already have. Still, you'll be happy you did in the off chance someone does snatch your focus.
In any case, welcome!
