Is there a book like the AD&D Book of Lairs?

You know, like a book with 20 or so small encounters like: the abandoned mine, forgotten city, mountain pass ambush, etc.

Yes. Mongoose publishing just came out with Book of Encounters.

And Mystic Eye Games has its Foul Locales series.

It is 20 short "Modern d20 scenes and events to evoke a sense of weirdness in your campaign."

I have not had a chance to look thru it yet, but am hoping many of the scenes will convert to fantasy games. For a buck, you can't go wrong.

WotC's book of challenges has a bunch of short encounters.

Penumbra has its en route and en route II books of short encounters.

As said before Mystic Eye Games has its Foul Locales books which have short horror scenarios.

There are a few others as well.

Best short encounters are from Necromancer Games in my view.

Demons and Devils along with Liches and Vampires. Both those two ROCK!!!

Foul locales are the best for short adventures. If you really want a lair book there is the Mongoose one and Tome of the Ancients, Vol 2 - Lairs, which is a pdf. Info on theat can be found here:
