Is there a D&D Master Monster Index/database out there?

While Staring at my 40+ Tomes of Monsters, I realized I'm incapable of correctly using all the resources I have at my disposal.

I don't have the time to flip through thousands & thousands of monster entires to come up with an adventure for the next week. (I won't even begin to discuss random encounters).

When 3.5 first came out, I tried to build a simple MS Access database with some relevant data, so I could build quick queries so I could reference a single print-out, rather than search Tomes of Lore for that perfect creature.

I'm looking for the following as a DM aid:

MS Excel or Access (or importable to either) file with 1 or more Monster Books put into it.

To be functional, each monster would havbe to have a field for Name, CR, and Source.

Preferably, it should also include: Alignment and Terrain to help with random encounters (no Bog Demons wandering around a desert).

Ideally, it would also have Level Adjustment and a denotation as to whcih monsters are Templates.

I'll go back to my original database & see how far I got. Maybe with enough of us working together, we can get one built.

Thanks,

Ok, Here is what I have at present in my Access database:

Format:

Monster Name(Template), Type, Subtype, Size, Climate, Terrain, ECL, CR, Alignment, Source.

Books I put in.

Armies of the Abyss (now combined into Green Ronin's Book of Fiends-not put in).

Creature Collection (not the 3.5 Revised verison I know have).

Creature Collection II.

Creature Collection III.

Creatures of Rokugan.

Ravenloft Denizens of Dread (I think its the 3.0 & not the 3.5 version).

Dramatis Personae ( A book of NPCs).

Draconic Lore

Enemies & Allies

Everquest Monsters of Norrath.

Fantasy Beastary

Fiend Folio

Giant Lore

Jade Dragons & Hungry Ghosts.

Liber Beastarius

Beastary of Loerem (Soveriegn Stone)

Legions of Hell (also combined in Book of Fiends).

Minions (the Bastion Press 3.0 version).

Monster Manual 3.5

Monster Manual 2.

Monsternomicon (the 3.0 version).

Monsters of Faerun.

Nightmares & Dreams I & II.

Necromantic Lore.

Tome of Horrors.

Twisted Lore.

That is what I have. It's been a while since I,ve worked with it.

some are not OGL.

like MM2 and MoF

I'm doing this so I can use these monsters in my game. In my game it doesn't matter whether they are OGL or not. If I cant write down the name of a monster I want to use, then I've wasted 40 bucks on a Monster Book.

Are you trying to say:

(I) can make a master monster index to help me with my games. I can use said index to my heart's content. But.

If I try to share that index (which would make ANY Monster Book several times more useful), I'm in violation of the Copyright/Product Identity of those publishers?

If so. That is incredibly stupid. (Though I see how that works from a legal stand point).

So, basically if I want to make something that makes a D&D/d20 book easier to use (a Master Monster Index in this case) I have 3 options.

1. Violate Copyright (not a valid option).

2. Get permission from EVERY publisher I'm going to include in the project.

3. Do everything my self, only use it in my games, don't share it.

I'm only trying to make (at heart) an electronic Index for my shelf of Monster Books on my bookcase. Something that essentially says 'These are all the CR X monsters you have & this is which book they are in.'

Doesn't copyright have a use clause for research. Sort of like quotations in research papers?

If just writing down Beholder, LE, Any Dungeon, CR 10. See Monster Manual 3.5 page 40 is violation of copyright or the Open Gaming License, fine. I withdraw my request.

I'll just stop buying monster books (I have too many to use effectively without that index).

But, thanks for pointing that out. It may suck. But it is the law.

You don't need to bother with OGL or copyright or whathaveyou if you're just making an index. You just can't include full stats. In my opinion.

yeah, i wasn't making a judgement call.

just saying that i think it should be something to consider if people start adding info...

as a fanbased... used only by you ... index ... i see no problem at all.

Or even posted online I wouldn't see the issue. The nature and purpose of the material, the small amount of matieral to be included, the effect on the market value of the original .... all of this seems to say "fair use" to me.
