There's also a prestige class, printed originally in Tome & Blood (dunno if it's been reprinted), that allowed you to substitute damage for expensive material components.
The class he's talking about is called Blood Magus, and it's in Complete Arcane for 3.5, but to qualify you have to die and be ressurected (a pretty hefty drawback, don't you think?)
