Is there a Sci-Fi books like this out there?

It'd be a lot easier to make recommendations without the bizarre specifications. :)

I don't get it. I never say "I want to read a book about two alien species at war." I might be in the mood for SF over fantasy, more literary over light, etc. Just curious why the exacting specs?

Research for a SF RPG campaign you're putting together or something?

I guess my one recommendation would be Schsmatrix Plus by Bruce Sterling.

More so just trying to find a book abotu stuff I like. In general everytime I pick up a book that someone has reccomeded it always turns out to be the exact opposite of what I like. So I chose to be specific this time. :)

Hehe, more Brin reccomendations. He must be a good author. :)

In that case another thing that works well is listing what books you DO like, with maybe a short explanation of why, and asking for more recommendations along those lines.

Yeah I know, I admit I have not read much Sci-Fi. But what has been reccomended sound slike I would like ti a lot. :) So it all works out in the end.

John Ringo has a series that would seem to fit the bill. The first book is "A Hymn Before Battle" and the second is "Gust Front". A short synopsis is a "Galatic Federation" shows up and tells earth that a centaroid/reptilian race called the Posleen, is cutting a swath through the galaxy and that the Earth is next on their to do list. However, the basically peaceful races of the Federation aren't doing a great job of fighting them. Note: Peaceful isn't the same thing as "nice".

So the earth has to try to purchase advanced technology, assmilate highly advanced technology, organize a planetary defense and while they're at it raise mercenary forces to enable them to earn the cash to do the first three things. Mean while it becomes increasingly obvious that earth's new "allies" have objectives that don't necessarily take into account the Earth's best interests.

One note about the Lenseman series. While they ARE the definition of space opera and classic novels in their own right, the dialogue can be... ah... Cliche'ed and stilted to put it mildly.

Try the Starfist series. Basicly its the Marines of the future doing what they do best. Kickin alien ass and takin names! I'll search my library for some books..... ;) :D

Might I recommend A Fire upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge? It has tons of aliens, galactic-scale battles, very advanced but believable technologies.

Also, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, which is much more character-driven than Vinge but concerns a war between humans and aliens.

Consider Phlebas by Iain . Banks is a great book about a war between humans (sorta) and aliens with ther aliens thrown in. I'm not surte it will have the tech descriptions you want. His books can apparently be hard to get in the US as well.
