This is destined for a flamewar, but it's not an odd question. I don't play it much, but I really like the Cepheus Engine as a solid all-comers kind of system that can handle most genres. It's a little but more flexible than standard OSR products for handling things like harder sci-fi.

I don't think so. At least, I'm not interested in dogging anyone's interests, just curious. Never used it. I'll give it a look!

Cepheus is an SRD treatment of the Traveller rules. A bunch of systems have used to good effect and it's base 2d6 mechanic is quite flexible.

I don't particularly believe a single game system will serve for all purposes these days, but if I was forced to choose a single one, I'd likely chose one I don't actually use much these days, because it'd produce less problems in less areas: the Hero System.
