Something that may or may not have been mentioned yet is that there's no reason one must buy or use the 4e FR setting. If you don't like the changes, nobody is forcing you to buy the new setting guide or move your campaign timeline forward in that way. You can continue to run a FR campaign using the absolutely huge body of FR supplements for AD&D 1e, AD&D 2e, and/or D&D 3e completely unhindered.
For what it's worth, I myself have never used anything but FR 1e supplements to run FR campaigns as I personally dislike pretty much everything that came later. I am particularly not a fan of the Time of Troubles. That said, it didn't ruin any of my campaigns. The argument that 4e FR is eeeeeeeeeeeevil because it will forcefully change a person's own campaign is pretty silly, IMO.
