Is this all for naught?

I'll be checking out 5e, but I won't buy sight-unseen. If it looks like it's going to be a significant upgrade from 3.5e, then I'll buy and upgrade.

But if 5e doesn't look like it's any better than 3.5e, or even if it is better but only slightly, I'll give it a miss. And in that case, I won't even look at 6e - I just don't have the will to wait out another edition cycle and another round of hoping for a better game.

Either way, I won't hate WotC for what they've done. If they produce a game I like, great. If not, it's no big deal - 3.5e is pretty good already. :)

If the game flushes the progress made by 4E to appease the fans who have already abandoned D&D, I won't see much reason to jump ship. If it has new mechanics that evoke the feel of all editions (4E included), then I will probably at least buy the Core 3. I strongly hope the MM is more like the Monster Vaults that have come out. If they go back to 3.5E half-hour to stat monsters that get killed in two minutes, I will avoid it like the plague. There is plenty of stuff that needs improvement from 4E (MCing, non-combat abilities, feat bloat), so I hope they take a look at a lot of that. I hope the half-level thing for attacks AND defenses goes away (seriously, it adds a number that is straight up cancelled out by the same number in the enemy).

Also, if Caster Supremecy, LFQW, or CoDZILLA returns (Monte Cook IS the lead designer after all), I won't even give it a second look.

"You must spread some experience points around before giving them to Casval again."

My current gaming environment forces me to play Pathfinder and Labyrinth Lord which are all about the old ways: there is no good reason at all for the Fifth Edition to imitate that, because my friends already have what they need. However I think that a homebrewed Fourth Edition is the only thing that will be a coherent alternative to Old School and 3.5 in the future.

To be honest it is going to take a lot to make me want to learn another DnD system.

To be honest if it implements to many of 4E rules and ideas that will kill it for me.

I don't have any nerdrage towards WOTC and I wish them success. But I have gotten to the age that just because something is shiny and new that is not enough to make me spend my money. It has got to be better than what I already have.

Even if it is a perfect system for me, it will not be for most of you. Odds are it will be perfect for someone, but not me, so, yes, I will houserule what I need to.

But that is all talking odds, no one has any idea what the game really will be.

I actually don't know now. I intend to end my current 4e campaign later this year and either offer a Savage Star Wars intermezzo or give my unsuspecting players a taste of 1e.

I'll buy the new core books or first set or whatever sight unseen, if only to see what direction D&D is headed.

I might offer to run a game using DDN if I think it will be more fun than the one I'll be running at that time.
