Oh I like your 18+ to hit idea that does simplify things. Thanks for your input.I'm not a fan of items/abilities/anything else that only work for characters that are already super strong. 1e had a lot of stuff like that, and it always felt like the rich getting richer. So I don't understand why you are using the dex modifier as a gatekeeper.
Secondly, this item seems specifically designed for high level rogues. So why not make it a rogue-only item? And why not have the rider kick in when the player rolls an 18+ to hit, or whatever? That will probably make it a lot easier to track and effective at whatever level.
I guess I used the Dex as a gate keeper because in our campaign every martial class is strength heavy, I am the only high Dex character. And the way our dm rewards loot is random, so an item that would excel in the hands of a barbarian might be found by a wizard. So we often have to trade and bargain with each to get the item we want. With high the Dex requirement the sword would be unusable for everyone else and saves me having to haggle for it.
Also I like the word Dexterous and it felt right that a name like that would ask for high Dex.
