The caster surrounds himself with field of energy which normally disrupts spells other people cast at him or area effect spells which might effect him. The spell screen initially has a rating of 5 which is how many spell levels the spell screen can negate. Each spell negated by the spell screen ruduces the rating of the spell screen by the spell level negated. If the spell screen negates an area effect spell, the spell negated for the caster only.

If a spell is particaly negated the caster gets a bonus to resist the spell equal to the difference between the spell screen rating an the spell level. The spell screen rating can be raised when the spell is first cast by using up open spell slots and spending spells. The screen rating improves by the open spell slots and or spent spells.

examples:
Bob casts the spell and the spell screen has a rating of 5. Bob is later the target of a polymorph other spell. The spell screen negates the effects of the polymorph other on Bob. The spell screen rating drops from 5, it's original rating, to 1 (5 - polymorph other spell level (4) = 1).

Later still bob is the target of a lighning bolt which the spell screen cannot stop, since its rating is now only 1. Bob does get a bonus to resist the spell however equal to the remaining spell screen rating: current spell screen rating 1 = +1. This also reduces the spell screen rating to 0, ending the spell.

Bob casts a spell screen which normally has a rating of 5. by spending a 1st lvl open spell slot (a free action), he increases the spell screen rating to 6 (5+1) If he had spent a fireball spell (a free action) the spell screen rating would be 8 (5+3).
