Is this WotC's pipe dream?

Are you thinking of switching your game to Next at this early date?

I am a special snowflake. I like the rules (mostly) and the direction they are going with D&D Next, but I am waiting on making any decisions until after I have seen the initial product offering and price point. If the initial products feel complete to me and are priced well, I will probably purchase. If not, I won't.

Its just too early to answer this.

Not enough info out yet. And it -IS- a playtest... the numbers will be changing in big ways.

Now is not the time to get frustrated, nor sadly, too attached to something you like.

I know your question says "IF" it stayed like it is...

But we're looking at what would be about 10 pages of a 200 page rulebook. I'd have to see the other 190 pages to even give the current info context.

It is probably to early to tell, but as of now I'm leaning against switching to 5E.

The rules so far have been a step backwards in game design, IMHO. It feels like WoTC is trying to make some sort of weird hybrid out of AD&D.

Maybe once the tactical rules are released, I'll enjoy 5E more, but I kind of doubt it.

I like what I've seen so far and would strongly consider this system for future games. However, I picked the special snowflake answer because I've had such uniformly bad experiences with attempting major shifts of rules system in mid-campaign that I would not even CONSIDER switching either of my current games over.

So if you want to know whether I like it, yes, I do. But that's not the question the poll actually asks, and I couldn't really answer that question.

If 5e ends up like I think it will (delivering a toned down 4e like tacticalness with an old school flavor) then a switch is likely.

We have three PF APs in the pipeline and are half way through another. Maybe when those are done we'll look at the game. But if there aren't any APs waiting for us by then, we'll probably not bother. We're not looking for the best system, just the most convienent system for our needs.

(1) This is a poll, so the answers are necessarily broad.
(2) I agree 100% re: systems being tools. I've often said the same myself; a game system isn't a life choice like having kids or switching jobs. But assuming you don't have the capacity to run every single game you want to - due to time, group availability, family, work, and financial concerns - the question is, "Will this replace one of the other games in your normal rotation?" In other words, will you "switch."

Thanks for the reasonable response. I keep coming across "next edition war" where it's very boolean, very "only 5e or no 5e". The poll talks about swapping and that pressed some buttons. I don't convert games mid-campaign, and I can easily see different editions coexisting much like I current do both 3.5 and 4e (as well as non-D&D games).

But now understanding what you mean by switch - you have limited time, will 5e take a chance at gaming that is currently filled with another edition, then the answer is probably eyes. Or to be more specific, when an existing game ends, 5e will be a candidate for filling that slot, now that I understand what you mean. (Though we're getting nostalgia for a superhero game, and in my gaming group we have some of our kids getting to the age to be interested and I don't know what system would be a good intro for them.)

I hope this wipes out the sadface. :D

I'm a special snowflake, who plays it all.

Will try DDN.

Keep playing DDN depends on not having encounter/daily powers for martial classes in the basic form.

If 5e continues in its current apparent direction, I will stick with 4e.

It has a few good ideas - primarily, I'm contemplating how to rejigger 4e's skill system to work like the playtest's, and I like the race-class-background-theme setup - but unless there are some major changes over the course of the playtest, 4e does what I want much, much better.

I've heard that monsters are set to change quite a bit, which is good - they are my single biggest beef with the playtest as it stands - and that might change my mind, but I've got a bunch of little concerns tied up in character creation and play that also give me pause. We'll see, I guess.
