Is tracking across the planes possible?

I'm wondering if the denizens of the Demonweb would be able to track my PCs who came in, stole something from the Fane of Eclavdra, and then escaped via portal to Sigil. Is there a spell or a feat or something that would enable the drow to determine who the thieves were, which portal they used, and/or where they went? Obviously I could make something up, but I wanted to see if I was overlooking a spell like, oh, scry across planes or something.

If I were trying to track you down I would do a few things:

Mundane tracking.

You'll likely leave prints or something to follow unless you have some manner of Pass Without Trace. This will likely lead me to the portal you took. The portal will likely have a fixed destination, so I'd know where you first left the Demonweb pits.

Spells

Discern Location will be the first spell I cast, and target the artifact. A Mind Blank active on the possessor of the artifact may prevent me from discovering its location, but possibly not.

Vision would be my second spell. I would expect information regarding the person who stole the object; a Mind Blank would thwart this, but I'd see what it would find out. If the Vision spell worked, then I have both the location of the artifact and the identity of the theives. Depending upon the ruling, a Vision spell may or may not allow me to cast Discern Location upon the theif. At this point you're in deep doo-doo.

There is a feat from the Dragon Compendium called "Astral Tracking". Among other things, it allows you to determine the destination of a teleportation spell or effect.

Thanks for those answers. Felix, those will be useful steps. I think my PCs are in trouble now! Ah, RETH-Mog, I knew there must be a spell like that. I didn't think to check Dragon Compendium. Anybody else have ideas?

Scrying works across planes. See this portion of the spell description.

You can see and hear some creature, which may be at any distance. If the subject succeeds on a Will save, the scrying attempt simply fails. The difficulty of the save depends on how well you know the subject and what sort of physical connection (if any) you have to that creature. Furthermore, if the subject is on another plane, it gets a +5 bonus on its Will save.

Emphasis added. By implication, it can be any plane. Greater scrying lasts 1 hour/level, allowing you to try to find multiple people who took something, or watch them at length after you find them.

Well, as said before, the PCs could be tracked via the mundane method of the Track feat up to the portal.

Analyze Portal (in Planar Handbook, 3rd level spell for bards, sorc/wiz) could tell them everything about the portal they would need to know in order to continue the pursuit into Sigil.
