Is wanting to destroy the world really all that evil?

is there some sort of rebirth cycle or prophecy that the group is trying to initiate for some reason?

maybe things have gotten bad enough (in their eyes) that they think it's time to hit the reset button ... but the other groups still think they can pull the world/existance out of the gutter?

just my first thoughts.

I think that, by normal game definitions, losing sight of the object of the exercise so badly that innocents start getting hurt is evil. This would be a massive failure to care about the welfare of others. What you are talking about is, essentially, an extreme "ends justify the means" rationalization, which generally falls in the Evil camp.
You're right. I was answering the original poster more in terms of how I view things in the real world, where he was asking about things within the ethical system D&D uses.

What is stopping the party from doing the standard hero thing and breaking the stupid chime?

Well, originally I was thinking typical "Ya just can't, it's magic. OOOOOOOO," but I've modified the idea a bit while in the shower (which, as everyone knows, is the single place most conducive to thought). Instead of a chime, it's a tuning fork. A tuning fork which destroys (well, disintegrates, makes no more) whatever it's tapped against (and, therefore, anything that is tapped against it). The baddies have gotten ahold of some gems from the outer planes, made of the very fabric of reality. Typically used to enhance magic, once struck with the fork it will cause reality to unwind.

Also, some more details if anyone's interested... The box the fork is in shields it from all who would try to magically locate it. However, the fork is just too powerful to be entirely contained and "leaks" a tiny bit of its essence... If the fork in the box remains in the same general area for too long, anyone who might care to could detect the buildup of its essence. For this reason, the box is given to someone to carry who wanders the land. Of course, should the fork be removed from the box its whereabouts will become known instantly and whoever's holding onto it at the time will have a matter of hours, maybe even less, to get out of dodge before several interested parties descend on it.

So... should I go with my gut and make them LE, or go with my policy and make them LN?

Unless the world would suffer a horrible corruption by chaotic entities of unmeasurable power if NOT destroyed, go with LE.

If horrors from beyond reality are coming to eat all the souls in the mortal world, sending everyone to the afterlife is a Lawful Good deed

I frankly cannot imagine any circumstances where destroying all of creation is anything but evil.

All creation, yes. The world, I can see several instances where that would be a good act. All of them revolve around a defeated world where the conquerers are about to do it to another planet. I could see this happening in Midnight or, in a modified sense, Oathbound.

Man, next time I need to work on my campaign I'm taking some dishes into the shower with me. :D

I also recommend mowing the grass for solid "think time". Plus you get more exercise (unless you have a big, riding mower). And your grass gets mowed.

The best part is of course that after you mow the grass...you need a shower. If you're careful you can stretch this into an entire afternoon of campaign work and your wife won't say a word!
