Pretty serious but from time to time there are some sarcastic or weird NPCs or some inept villains who manage to creep in. Occassionally it helps lighten the mood.

Serious with a fair bit of humor thrown in. As one player put it, considering what the characters' occupations and lifestyle is like, if they didn't have a sense of humor then they'd all be in a mental ward by now.

I selected option 3 instead of option 4 accidentally. Generally the way my games work, though, most of the humour derives from the players while the characters remains serious. In the game I'm currently running, though, there is one comical character who is working out well.

Much like Star Trek, I run 3-4 serious adventures, then a comical one. My players sometimes develop funny schticks in the middle of a serious adventure or go with a serious subplot in a silly adventure.

Why? Why not.

I don't just want a grim game, nor do I want a full-on silly one. This is pretty much the style I run with all systems -- RuneQuest, Ars Magica, etc. Of course I have yet to run a serious Paranoia adventure, but...

My weekly group is full of comic relief which is evident by the various joke comments and character insults that make their way into the Story Hour. We've also all been friends for a quarter-century now so enjoy joking around.

My PBP group on the other hand is very serious. We know each other primiarly through the game and gaming sites, having only gotten together in person on two weekends.

Depends on the players and the game.
