Please no. Nononononono... Giant centipedes and spiders were horrible enough. An island rat swarm? Nightmares. Eeeeeeeeeeeek!!!

Ha. Rats are awesome.

Yeah, right up there with mosquitos (number one killer of humans), parasitic worms, genetically damaging plastics (which you come into contact daily), brown tree snakes and zebra/quagga mussels (cause billions in damage annually).

As for the invasive concept, I tend to use it more in sci-fi settings. When I do use them in fantasy, death and misery follow with starvation, civil war and slaughter of spellcasters (who are either blamed for the invasion or not helping stop it). It isn't a fun concept.

Yeah, in sci-fi settings that is gold.

Ha! I've just had an afternoon of Bruno Mattei! Check out Rats: Night of Terror for some ideas on how to utilize this concept effectively not mess this concept up horribly.

how about this one as another news generated adventure seed?

Put the birds in a pen as mounts for a halfling pony express service, and replace the shot gun with either a repeating cross bow wielded by an assassin or a battleaxe held by a halforc.

The hears a disturbance in the night, investigate, try to help the innocent birds and ends up fighting both them and the vengence seeker.

I don't know why, but the article doesn't come up for me. I've had other problems with links to yahoo stories too... I don't know what's going on with them the last few days.

A rat island, though---I can dig it. I'd throw some skaven in there while I was at it, though. Or the d20 equivalent from Scarred Lands. With Ron Spencer artwork!
